THE APPLIANCE OF FINE IN CRIMINAL LAW OF THE BALTIC STATES

Abstract

In order to suppress and prevent crime in general, and particularly with the intention to combat property crime, which is predominant in contemporary crime structure, all modern criminal legislations have developed systems of various criminal sanctions. Among them, financial criminal sanctions can be singled out due to their specific nature, character, effect and significance. The particular character of property crimes and the character of their perpetrators required a specific financial sanction – a fine, the effect of which is not only repressive but exceptionally preventive as well. In this paper, the definition, features, concept, characteristics and system of imposing of fine according to solutions prescribed by the criminal codes of the Baltic republic’s : Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are discussed.
